What to Buy !
Hutch / Housing
Ideally you need the biggest hutch possible for breeding and a minimum 3 x 2 x 2 hutch for individuals . Dog cages are the ideal cheap set up and can have wire floors put on the base. Normal wooden hutches are ideal for angoras as long as you bed them on a layer of shavings and barley straw on top. If kept outside they should be out of the sun and rain .. never got wet, so dont allow to run on the morning dew on the grass and ensure a shady area is available to shelter them from in their runs. Angoras dont mind a run about, but do just sit and lie in one place which is why a nice cosy space is suitable, but does not distract from the need to allow them to stretch their legs and have a kick about in a dry exercise area.
There are rabbit residence cages about which have wire rack floors already built in and pull out litter trays.. the large ones of these are only suitable for young angoras tho and not a large enough size to keep adults in .. . they make fantastic travel cages tho and are ideal to house your angoras in on weekends away at shows as a temporary measure. If you have the space then a 48 inch dog cage is the perfect home for the adult angora inside. Angoras need a minimum three foot wide hutch for bucks, and four foot wide for does (to raise kits in) hutches should be two foot high and deep to allow them to stand up and stretch out.
Grooming
Angora rabbits are the most difficult rabbit to care for. Their coat is wool not fur and must stay dry and needs daily / regular grooming.
For the pet owner a soft brush, rotating tooth comb, talc and hairdryer - on a cold setting is sufficient to keep the coat free from matts and well tended to. Whereas the exhibitor will need to keep the tips on the rabbits and avoid brushing, but invest in a professional blower or vacuum and will spend many an hour teasing the wool with their fingers, to keep the coat in show condition.
Every three months, (every month in the summer) pet / breeding angoras will need to have their wool clipped / sheared, so a good pair of scissors is also required.
The breeder who sold you your angora should have demonstrated how to clip or offer a clipping service in their aftercare. If they didn't then please do not attempt to do this, without first getting guidance, as the rabbit could be traumatised or worse, injured. You will need a pair of hairdressing scissors - fiskar needlework scissors is my preferred choice.
